Chapter 9

Supplies were running low. It churned Gem’s stomach that she would have to go inside where the rations were. The computers automatically stocked it on the cruise liner, and she was starting to run out. Still there was intense dread at the idea. Someone had to keep the generators running and she was the last one. There wasn’t much choice, she couldn’t just give up.

Fear was high as she sat outside the airlock for nearly a day before she could bring herself to do it. Movements on the radar beeped. There was a time when they were not near and seemed to almost sleep. Days meant nothing in this sunless place, but they did have a routine. It had taken time, but she was sure that none of them were near, so she gathered courage and her bags. The fabric was clenched in her hand when she finally opened the airlock door.

Roses and lilacs filled her nose and made her heart sing. It wasn’t enough to soothe the terror in the pit of her stomach as she walked onto the cruise liner. She walked down to the end of the lobby and looked down the hallways. There was no sound. Not far away was a concierge room. Inside she opened the dispensary and started to desperately fill the bags. She had them to the brim and was closing the door when it happened. A young woman standing in the doorway.

She pushed her terror to the pit of her stomach and smiled meeting the woman's eyes. “Lady Duchess, how are you this evening?” She walked forward, towards the person without a sign of fear.

“I could not sleep and wanted a midnight snack, you know how it is,” the Duchess said with a warm smile. “But you beat me to it seems.”

Gem motioned for the duchess to walk with her. She kept back a step, enough to always be in line of sight. The duchess complied. “I have so much work to do; it is hard for me to come by often. If I did when the lord was about, he would insist upon a feast, yet I cannot leave my work for such an amount of time.”

“He would indeed,” the duchess said as they walked through the lobby. “But you are so missed. Everyone wishes you would wear the red dress again; you were so beautiful then.”

The comment made her heart weep, and long for the red dress. The ideas of a grand and glorious feast flooded her mind. It was a great effort to put it aside and keep walking. Had there been more than just the Duchess she might not have been able to.

They were within sight of the door when she made a mistake. Gem stumbled and broke the line of sight. Instinct kicked in immediately and she took off running as a scream filled the air. The unholy sound made the room vibrate. Gem’s vision shook from the intensity and became blurred. Momentum was the only thing that saved her as it carried her forward to the airlock.
